International Day of Peace

Every year 21 September is celebrated as International Day of Peace all over the world. The United Nations started this day in the year 1981 to promote the ideals of peace among all the countries and peoples of the world. After this, it was celebrated for the first time on the third Tuesday of September in the year 1982. From 1982 to 2001, the International Day of Peace was celebrated on the third Tuesday of September. Two decades later, in 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared this day a day of non-violence and a ceasefire. Since then, the International Day of Peace is being celebrated every year on the 21st of September.

For the first time, this day was celebrated in 1982 by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people. In 2013 the UN Secretary-General dedicated it to peace education.

The day begins with the ringing of the United Nations Peace Bell at the United Nations Headquarters (New York). The bell is made from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, which were gifted by the United National Association of Japan. This bell is a reminder of the value of man in war. It is written on its side that there should always be peace in the world.
